Wicked: The Original Broadway Script

Perfect for any fan of the hit musical. One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz...

Slay The Demons

This is a screenplay, not a novel and is in screenplay format. That said, it is very easy to read and follow the story. Brent Fischer is a Hollywood literary agent. He sells movie scripts, and he does it well. He’s in a relationship with a woman he loves, Emily Moss, and she loves him even more. His life is in order, his future is bright, he just has to stay away from his past. Brent has a history of drug problems. He has a history of suicidal tendencies. A year ago his boss talked him down from a ledge, checked him into a hospital, got him sobered up. And Tony says he can keep his job as long as he stays in counseling and as long as he stays off drugs. So Brent begrudgingly sees a psychiatrist and assures everyone he’s clean. But he’s not clean, he’s leading a double life. And as with all who tried before him, Brent’s two lives eventually collide. With Emily on business in New York, Brent plans a killer party. And it goes off without a hitch – hookers, booze, drugs, the w..

Confession

Noise Pollution (loud music) can drive people mad, literally. This monologue has been written for performance. As you read, you become embroiled in the anguish of the confessor. It is almost autobiographical in that the writer was experiencing a problem with her neighbour’s loud music at the time. It was written as a sort of therapeutic piece to make sure that the ending did not actually happen. Or did it?..

Performing the Goat

This book holds a very interesting group of plays. They seem to hold their targets very precisely, as the settings do not have a locale-specific context. Fergus' Envy invites us to the eccentric Lord Florien Thrust's mansion where a week-long birthday party is in full swing for his pet dog, Fergus. The Stair has a nice Kafkaesque, Pinteresque, Beckettesque feeling of menacing pointlessness. Darren Brealey's sharp, all-encompassing vision takes us swiftly from a smart drawing-room 'house party' scenario to a car repair shop at the witching hour (lunch time), and thence to the lounge area of a multiplex cinema. The Chicks is like a glimpse into another and more dreadful world, but alas, truthful. Cynical? You could say. When one of the characters in Disturbing Mavis exits pursued by a bier, you know you have a playwright with a special take on life. Richly humorous, sometimes extreme in its language, and devastating in its portrayal of social pitfalls, this collection of one-acters will ..

Script Culture and the American Screenplay (Contemporary Approaches to Film and Television)

Though the history of the screenplay is as long and rich as the history of film itself, critics and scholars have neglected it as a topic of serious research. Script Culture and the American Screenplay treats the screenplay as a literary work in its own right, presenting analyses of screenplays from a variety of frameworks, including feminism, Marxism, structuralism, philosophy, and psychology. In distancing the text of screenplays from the on-screen performance typically associated with them, Kevin Alexander Boon expands the scope of film studies into exciting new territory with this volume.Script Culture and the American Screenplay is divided into two parts. Part 1 provides a general background for screenplay studies, tracing the evolution of the screenplay from the early shot lists and continuities of George Méliès and Thomas Harper Ince to the more detailed narratives of contemporary works. Part 2 offers specific, primarily thematic, critical examinations of screenplays, along wi..
